The second highest peak is Mount Townsend, standing at 2,209 meters (7,247 feet), also in New South Wales. The third highest is Mount Bartle Frere, reaching 1,622 meters (5,322 feet) in Queensland.

Other notable physical features include the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef system stretching over 2,300 kilometers along Queensland's coast, the Uluru monolith rising 348 meters from the red desert floor in the Northern Territory, and the vast outback plains that cover much of central Australia's interior.

The Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern coast for over 3,500 kilometers. The Blue Mountains in New South Wales are known for their dramatic escarpments and valleys. Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) is a group of large rock formations near Uluru in the Northern Territory. The Flinders Ranges in South Australia feature rugged ridges and gorges.

Tasmania's wilderness areas include Cradle Mountain and deep fjord-like valleys. The Nullarbor Plain is a vast, flat limestone plateau spanning South Australia and Western Australia. Various gorges like Kings Canyon and Simpsons Gap are located in central Australia.
