About the German Postal Code System

Germany’s postal code system was first introduced in July 1941 to improve the efficiency and accuracy of mail and parcel delivery. This initial system used two-digit postal codes. The main reasons for its introduction were the very high volume of mail generated by the German military during World War II and the shortage of experienced postal workers. In addition, newly annexed or renamed towns had to be integrated into the postal system.

After German reunification in 1990, two different four-digit postal code systems existed simultaneously: approximately 3,400 codes in West Germany and 2,020 codes in East Germany, resulting in about 5,420 postal codes in total. Instead of merely adjusting duplicate codes, the Deutsche Bundespost introduced a completely new, unified system for the whole country.

This reform led to the adoption of the current five-digit postal code system, which allows for much more precise geographic allocation. Large cities can be divided into smaller delivery areas, and large institutions or organizations may have their own dedicated postal codes. For example, Humboldt University of Berlin uses the postal code 10099, while its street address lies in the 10117 area, and the German Bundestag uses the postal code 11011.

In theory, the five-digit system allows for 100,000 possible postal codes, but due to structural restrictions the practical maximum is 98,901. Currently, around 30,000 postal codes are actively used in Germany.

The first two digits of a German postal code identify the postal routing region (Postleitregion). Each routing region contains between 20 and 200 assigned numbers, which are allocated starting from the main post office and distributed partly according to population size and partly in alphabetical order. Within these regions, lower numbers are typically assigned to PO boxes, while higher numbers are used for standard delivery districts.

Germany’s military postal service operates using a separate numbering system for deployment areas.
